Progress Energy - (800) 452-2777 Servicing Wilmington, Hampstead and surrounding Areas. Progress Energy Carolinas, the newly renamed Carolina Power & Light. Many mergers ago, CP&L had its origins with the company that ran the old beach trolley cars and Lumina, the pavilion and dance hall at Wrightsville Beach. CP&L is based in Raleigh and has a major service center in Wilmington. It operates the coal-burning L.V. Sutton power plant just west of Wilmington, and the Brunswick Nuclear Plant near Southport.

Brunswick Electric Membership Corp. - (800) 842-5871 Most of Brunswick County, including the beach towns, is served by BEMC. The cooperative is now part of the Touchstone Energy consortium. Offices are near Supply.

City of Southport - (910) 457-7935 Operates the only municipal electric utility in Southeastern North Carolina. It is part of the North Carolina "ElectriCities" group.

Four County Electric Membership Corp. - (800) 368-7289 serves central, northern and western Pender County. Part of Touchstone Energy. Headquarters is in Burgaw.

Jones-Onslow Electric Membership Corp. - (800) 682-1515 Serves part of eastern Pender County, including Topsail Island. A Touchstone Energy member. Headquarters are in Jacksonville; a district office is in Sneads Ferry.

BellSouth - (888) 757-6500 Serves Wilmington, New Hanover County and much of the surrounding area. Communities in Bell territory include Wrightsville, Carolina and Kure Beaches; the Scotts Hill, Hampstead, Holly Ridge, Castle Hayne, Rocky Point and Burgaw areas to the north; Leland, Belville and Acme to the west; and the Southport-Oak Island area to the southwest.
Except for Burgaw, calls between Wilmington and these areas are local. All area codes are 910.

Sprint - (910) 347-9011 Provides local phone service in much of eastern North Carolina, including Jacksonville and Onslow County. Its service area includes all of Topsail Island. The local office is in Jacksonville.

Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. - (888) 367-2862 Central and western Brunswick County, including Boiling Spring Lakes and the beach towns from Holden Beach west, is served by this member-owned cooperative. It now supplies cable TV service and Internet connections. Offices are in Shallotte.

Time Warner Cable: Operates cable systems in Wilmington and Southport. Available services include digital cable and Road Runner broad-band online access.
Wilmington system covers Wrightsville Beach, Castle Hayne, all of northern New Hanover County and the Leland area of Brunswick County. 763-4638

Water and Sewer Service

The City of Wilmington operates the region's largest public utility system. It draws water from the Cape Fear River just above Lock & Dam No. 1, out of reach of the tides and salt-water contamination. Wilmington's sewer system includes two treatment plants: Northside, on 23rd Street near the airport, and Southside on River Road.

New Hanover County operates a sewer system that serves suburban neighborhoods around and -- due to annexations -- inside Wilmington's city limits. The county's sewer lines connect to the city's treatment plants. Political feuding between city and county governments has prevented any progress toward consolidating the two systems.
